New Year's Resolutions
As we are leaving 2016 behind, it is time to take a look back and think through all of our decisions and how they have impacted our lives. Some of them were good, some bad, some made us feel better, others even hurt our health, but that’s all in the past now.
It is time to turn over a new healthy leaf and make resolutions for the year to come. Don’t wait a second more, grab a pen and start writing down New Year’s resolutions to live by.
WORK ON YOUR HEALTH
Health isn’t something that simply happens to people, it is something you have to work on every year, all year long. Start with a balanced diet that includes all the necessary nutrients. Eat more vegetables, and replace processed snacks with healthier alternatives, such as nuts and dried fruits. Exercising is another essential ingredient for a healthy body.
According to Australian Heart Foundation we should aim to accumulate 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate intensity physical activity or 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous intensity physical activity each week. Try to at least be somewhere in that average range, and if you succeed to do more – good for you.
QUIT A BAD HABIT
We all have bad habits. That can be everything ranging from smoking and consuming alcohol to overeating comfort food and obsessive binge watching Netflix TV shows. It is about time to quit that habit, or at least to reduce it to minimum. Try various methods (self-help books, counselling, etc.) to find out what works best for you.
LEARN TO COPE WITH STRESS
Stress is the cruel silent killer of today. It torments you for years and decades, and you don’t even realise how damaged you are. Learning to cope with stress will prolong your life and make you feel instantly happier. You can do that through deep breathing, meditation, yoga, martial arts sport, dancing, hobby, etc.
Sleep deprivation leaves you inattentive, incapable of coordinating your eyes and hands, irritable, unfocused and with dull looking skin. When it lasts for longer time periods, it can even impact the development of type 2 diabetes. Sleeping better doesn’t mean only sleeping for 8 hours, but also comfortably and without interruptions. A quality latex mattress will help you keep your body well-supported, but you should also acquire an ergonomic pillow to avoid neck pain.
TRAIN YOUR BRAIN
Just like your body, your brain can become lazy and slow down. Don’t panic, though; if you give it a proper training, it will reward you with boosted brain power. That can be learning a new language, taking a course or even going back to school. This will provide you with better memory, improved verbal skills, sense of accomplishment and it will reduce the risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.
A sedentary lifestyle can be just as dangerous as smoking. It slows down your metabolism and affects other body functions. If you are forced to sit because of work, try to interrupt the sitting patterns with five minute walks or exercises, go on foot wherever you can, walk around the house while talking on the phone, etc.
TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOUR SKIN
Your skin is the biggest organ of your body, so you should take better care of it. Wear sunscreen every time you leave the house, have a proper skincare routine that involves day and night cream (with the capacity of reducing wrinkles while you’re sleeping and regenerating the skin).
SPEND TIME WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY
We rarely have enough time to devote it to our dear people, but that shouldn’t be an excuse. Spending time with the people you love isn’t wasting it, it is renewing and revitalising. Sharing stories, joys and worries with friends and family are great de-stressors and laughter is the best medicine for all your pains. So, this year, make some room for socialising.
SWITCH TO ORGANIC LIFESTYLE
Humans are born to be connected with nature, and although this modern lifestyle has set us apart from it, we can always find ways to return to it. Spending time in nature can improve your mood, relieve your depression and make you generally healthier.
Good health is something one builds gradually, so don’t expect to see the results of your actions to happen right away, but that shouldn’t make you give up. Make your resolutions and stick to them. We wish you a healthy New Year!
